Here at Apple Family Dental our team of dental professionals have seen a wide range of oral traumas, tooth decay and damage done to teeth. In our vast experience we have found that a toothache, is always a symptom of a more serious problem.

Issues with tooth decay, tend to be the most common cause of a toothache. This kind of pain localized in a single tooth often means the decay has penetrated the sensitive pulp or root of the tooth. To resolve this, your dentist might need to perform a root canal.

If the pain is associated with a direct trauma such as a blow to the face or a hard fall, it likely damaged the internal structures of the tooth. If you have blood and debris in your mouth you can rinse it away with lukewarm salt water. This might also soothe injured gums. If the toothache was caused by trauma and you experience swelling in your cheek, gums or face, you can lightly hold a cold compress on the area for 15 minutes at a time.

You can try to rub your gums with a topical oral analgesic to ease the pain, but it will only be a short term solution to something that is likely to cause long term complications.

If you have a toothache, you should not delay in contacting Apple Family Dental’s office in Longview, Washington at 360-423-5580 to schedule a timely appointment.
